No Stone Without a Name
by Philippa O'Brien
A history of possession and dispossession in Australia's west.
Taking its title from the journal of explorer George Grey, this book places European concepts of land and its ownership beside the infinitely more complex relationships in Aboriginal culture.
It traces the incursions of the Enlightenment explorers and scientists, followed by the founding of the Swan River Colony with its sense of entitlement, Christian certainty and imperial authority. Immersion in this visual world offers a meditative space and a way to feel our way forward in this troubling and discomforting experience.
