Opening Event: Sub Urban Language by the Collage Art Group

You are warmly invited to join us for the opening event of Sub Urban Language by the Collage Art Group.

Twelve artists from the suburbs use their unique imaginings to express the feelings that arise from their situation and existence.

Through diverse visual concepts and both traditional and experimental mediums, this body of work invites audiences to engage with suburbia in layered and unexpected ways.

From early settlements built around survival to today’s complex lifestyle choices, suburbia carries its own language—of parks, coastlines, bushland, isolation and community. As reflected in David Lynch: The Art Life, houses hold unseen stories behind lit or darkened windows. We may choose where we live, but do these sub urban undercurrents ultimately shape who we become?

Puppet Playtime: Thelma the Unicorn by Aaron Blabey

Puppet Playtime: Thelma the Unicorn

We’re excited to welcome Spare Parts Puppet Theatre to Ellenbrook Arts for a magical Puppet Playtime session inspired by Thelma the Unicorn by Aaron Blabey.

This playful and imaginative experience invites children to step into the story through performance, creativity and shared discovery. Together, we’ll explore themes of curiosity, kindness, imagination and self-acceptance in a gentle, engaging way that supports social and emotional wellbeing.

Each 60-minute session begins with a lively, performative reading led by a professional artist, followed by three hands-on creative activities inspired by the story. These activities encourage creative play, empathy and expression, giving children space to explore ideas through making and movement. Small group sizes ensure the experience feels personal, relaxed and immersive.

About Thelma the Unicorn
Thelma is an ordinary pony who dreams of being extraordinary. When her wish to become a unicorn comes true, she soon learns that fame and glitter aren’t everything. This much-loved story celebrates being yourself and reminds us that who you are is already enough.

My Bag, My Story: Upcycled Fashion Workshop
Feb
12
to 19 Mar

My Bag, My Story: Upcycled Fashion Workshop

A series of workshops for young people aged 12 to 25 years old at Ellenbrook Youth Centre.

Thursdays:

3:30-5:30pm, 12 Feb

3:30-5:30pm, 19 Feb

3:30-5:30pm, 26 Feb

3:30-5:30pm, 5 Mar

3:30-5:30pm, 12 Mar

3:30-5:30pm, 19 Mar

Participants will transform old pairs of jeans into unique handmade tote or backpack designs, learning essential sewing and appliqué techniques along the way. Each bag becomes a personal artwork, a functional piece that expresses memory, identity, and creativity. Participants will design and attach fabric appliqué squares representing meaningful moments or symbols from their lives. For example, a blue square might signify the ocean from a childhood trip, while a patch of plaid could evoke family or tradition.

Why Upcycled Denim Bags?

An old pair of jeans carries stories. Denim is a fabric that remembers: softening, fading, tearing, and shaping itself around the body over time. Every crease and worn edge become a quiet record of lived experience. In this way, denim is like a second skin: it holds traces of movement, labour, and life.

Transforming an old pair of jeans into a bag invites participants to explore storytelling through fashion, not through words, but through materials. Fashion functions as a cultural language, communicating identity, belief, and history. It is a visual form of communication that both reflects and shapes culture.

Each participant will select a pair of old jeans from a shared collection. They won’t know who once wore them, but their choice will be guided by intuition- drawn to a particular shade, texture, or pattern of wear. In doing so, they connect with an existing story before reimagining it as their own.

Once their bags are sewn, participants will decorate them with fabric swatches and appliqué squares, each representing a personal memory or symbol. The result is a layered creation, a blend of past and present, collective and individual narrative, where every bag becomes a unique reflection of its maker. The bag itself carries a double meaning, as each participant quite literally carries their story on their back (or shoulder).

Reframed Horizons by Panizza Allmark

Reframed Horizons showcases Panizza Allmark’s global practice of photographie feminine, a dynamic, photographic response to the environment. In documentary photography from across the world, the overlooked, as well as familiar landscapes are transformed into sites of tension and ambiguity. Through strategies such as the use of doubling, where the ordinary appears strange and the strange unsettling familiar. This creates a dialectical vision that oscillates between the natural and constructed, presence and absence, reality and artifice. In a range of photographic series, Panizza explores the politics of the uncanny as an aesthetic practice, by challenging dominant visual narratives of people and place, exposing hidden views, and reclaiming vision as a space of resistance to the everyday.
